a5c7b9f00b A retired CIA spy and a fledgling FBI agent team up to investigate the murder of a U.S. senator and catch a notorious killer in this high-stakes political thriller starring Richard Gere and Topher Grace. Back when he was an active operative, Paul Shepherdson (Gere) devoted his every waking minute to capturing "Cassius" – an elusive Soviet hit-man with a spectral reputation. Decades later, Shepherdson believes that Cassius has been taken out of the game. But when a U.S. senator is assassinated and all evidence links the killing to Cassius, Shepherdson's former boss Tom Highland (Martin Sheen) convinces his old operative to investigate. Meanwhile, FBI agent Ben Geary (Grace) becomes positively certain that the high-profile murder is the work of the notorious Soviet hatchet man, and begins working with Shepherdson to crack the case. Now, in order to learn their target's true identity, Shepherdson and Geary must first revisit the entire case from top to bottom. In the process, the two determined men uncover a clue that indicates Cassius may not, in fact, be the prime suspect that the government has been chasing for decades, but instead the last person anyone ever expected. A retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator's murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin. I just finished reading a spirited discussion of this film on its IMDb board, and I must say, there seems to be confusion over the plot and people are dividedto whether or not they liked it. Most of the posters hated it.

"The Double" is a 2011 film starring Richard Gere, Topher Grace, and Martin Sheen. A retired CIA agent (Richard Gere) is brought back into action when an assassin believed dead seems to have returned. The agent, Paul Shepherdson disagrees that it's this particular assassin, Cassius, but a young, ambitious FBI agent, who has become an expert on Cassius, is sure that he is killing again. The two team up to find him.

The first twist is the one that people seem to be of two minds about - without giving anything away, I'll say that some people think the Shepherdson character was telling the truth, and others think he wasn't. The second twist is okay. But frankly, there wasn't much original here.

The script is kind of slapped together and the movie is rather short for the material. I've never been a fan of Richard Gere, and this film didn't convert me. I wasn't familiar with Topher Grace. He's somewhat bland.

In the end, I don't know who's right and who's wrong about the first twist. This for me was a rather average film no matter what. If you rent it, you'll probably like it better than if you spent $10-12 for it. I guessed the plot before they even gave the hints. This is almost a good movie - the acting talent just about saves it.

It was an OK performance direction-wise but watching it was like listening to a competent amateur pianist plod through a Chopin piece. It was just bland, and lacking in artistry or sophistication. A barely warm dish of Cold War leftovers that shows its hand too early, then works itself into an increasingly implausible tangle of knotty plot developments without ever mustering much intensity.
